Diana Carneiro, a Brazilian artist and botanical illustrator based in Curitiba, PR, began her academic journey with a background in Biological Sciences in 1968. She subsequently worked as a teacher of Science and Biology for 25 years. However, her artistic journey took shape when she enrolled in the School of Music and Fine Arts of Paraná, where she pursued a degree in Painting, graduating in 1992.

In 1997, Diana was awarded the Margaret Me Foundation Artistic Fellowship, which allowed her to spend five months at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew, England, under the guidance of Christabel King. This marked a turning point in her career as she immersed herself in botanical illustration, using watercolors to depict plant portrays or biomas landscapes  and pen and ink techniques in graphic descriptions, employing for Master's and PhD dissertations and theses.

To date, Diana has produced approximately 400 descriptive botanical illustrations, some of which depict newly discovered species for the field of Science. Her work has been published in numerous bulletins and scientific journals, and she collaborates with various higher education institutions, providing training for scientific illustrators both in Brazil and abroad.

She is a founding member of the Center for Botanical Illustration of Paraná (CIBP), established in 2000 as a non-profit cultural association, to promote botanical illustration in Brazil and train aspiring illustrators. Diana is actively involved in organizing and teaching the Extensive Course of Botanical Illustration and other projects offered by this organization.

Publications

Author of the book Botany Illustration: Principles and Methods, published in 2012 by Editora da Universidade do Paraná. The work, consisting of 228 illustrated pages, was the first publication on the subject in Brazil, in Portuguese, and was reprinted in 2015 to meet the needs of countless students and professionals in this area.

 

Sold out in 2018, there was a second edition, revised and expanded, with a current 288 pages, heavily illustrated, recently launched by the same publisher, in August of this year.

Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation (USA);
Federal University of Paraná, among others.
